Free Comic Book Day 2015 hype!

FCBD_header_2015sm

Wow guys! We can’t believe it’s already almost time for Free Comic Book Day 2015. Last year’s event was HUGE. This year will probably be bursting at the seams.

We have four more pages to do after this one so it’s going to be REALLY tight, as we need to print in about two weeks. That means no sleep for a few nights. That also means that if you come over and buy chapter 4 at our booth, you will get to see the ending before it goes online! Tempting, hmm? 😀 We will be selling our comics at Open Book Comics Fest 2014 prices, which are R50 each for chapters 1 & 2, and R60 each for chapters 3 & 4.

We will NOT be reprinting chapters 1-3. We will only be doing a smallish run of chapter 4. It is not likely that we will be reprinting chapters 1-3 in future, unless there is a sudden huge demand for them. We want to finish up the stock that we currently have and then focus our finances on new stock. Once we have chapter 5 complete, we’ll do a limited run of chapter 5 books, and after that we will no longer be printing loose versions of chapters 1-5. Instead, we will be printing Volume I of Cottonstar, which will contain chapters 1 through 5. We’ll see what happens after chapter 5. Hopefully by then we will be able to produce the comic fast enough to be able to do another volume within a reasonable amount of time.

We will also have EXCLUSIVE NEW PRINTS at FCBD, featuring absolutely amazeballs artwork from our ~mystery chapter 5 cover artist~! They’ve sent us the image and we just can’t wait to show you guys. We won’t be putting up a teaser online, so if you come to FCBD, you will have the opportunity to see it for the first time.

Our gracious hosts and good friends Readers Den now have a dedicated website for FCBD. It lists vendors, artist alley exhibitors, events, activities and more. There is also a Facebook event page for it, in case you needed some social media reminders.

  1. Free Comic Books! I’m all for it!
Any idea what airfare is from the West Coast USA?
I wish I wasn’t so broke, I’d at least get a copy of everything you have in stock, it’s not just a good story, it’s great artwork, timeless in itself.

    • Aw thanks, that’s really nice of you. :3 Hopefully at some point in the near future we’ll be able to offer cheaper shipping for our international readers. We hate having to charge so much! It’s the same story buying stuff from elsewhere to import to SA. The shipping ends up being the same price (or more than) the items you’re buying.

The good news is that Free Comic Book Day is an international event! You ought to be able to find some participating comic stores near you. You can check out their site to find out where you can go: http://www.freecomicbookday.com/Home/1/1/27/992

      • Wow again and Thanks! The shop that orders one of my favorite serial comics is one of 2 in Santa Cruz, and 4 more ‘over the hill’ locals that participate in Free Comic Day. Joe is great. No, not so great they named coffee after him, Maybe the other way around. 🙂

      • Concerning shipping, I don’t know what methods your using, but media is usually slower, and less expensive, as long as it’s reliable in your area. The other thing is that when I have to make international purchases I find that say, maybe 3 comic books ship for the same price as one due to weight. If you were figure our one example, and show how the books got cheaper the more you buy… well you might shortly have less stock!
So what would Chapter 1 cost to USA, Santa Cruz 95060, then chapter 1+2, then 1-3, then 1-4.

I’ll ask Joe at Atlantis if he’s seen Cotton Star.

        • The problem is that our post office sees items up to a certain size as a “large letter,” which costs a certain price, and then once you get to around 3 or 4 comics, it turns into a “small parcel” which only gets more expensive because within that category you pay per gram. The sketched editions have backing boards which also fall outside of the “large letter” size so they get weighed and measured as parcels. We laid out a complicated shipping fee structure in one blog post in an attempt to explain. However a friend of ours uses a service which allows you to buy bags at a set price, then basically whatever you can fit in there gets sent. I think they have a minimum threshold as well for the amount of bags you buy. At this stage our business is not thriving enough for that to be viable but if things start picking up pace we may have to look into it. The problem is that the set price is higher than viable for say, one or two comics.

If Joe hasn’t heard of Cottonstar maybe give him the website! We do stock our comics at several shops so he’s more than welcome to order some.

What's on your mind?
